{"id":14,"date":"2026-06-16T15:15:26","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T15:15:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/williamssociety.org\/2026biennialconference\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2026-07-31T15:17:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T15:17:20","slug":"paris","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/williamssociety.org\/2026biennialconference\/paris\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Places in Paris of Interest from Williams\u2019s Life and Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is a list of some places mentioned in <em>Autobiography<\/em> and <em>A Voyage to Pagany<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hotels the Williamses stayed in when they were in Paris<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>H\u00f4tel Lutetia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first hotel Williams and Floss stay in upon arriving in Paris, in the Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s area; the art nouveau style hotel is located on Boulevard Raspail\/Rue de S\u00e8vres and is very well known, today called the Mandarin Oriental Lutetia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mandarinoriental.com\/en\/paris\/lutetia\">https:\/\/www.mandarinoriental.com\/en\/paris\/lutetia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>H\u00f4tel Unic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hotel in Montparnasse where Floss and Williams stayed their final stretch in Paris during the 1924 visit. Today, the hotel is called Unic Renoir Saint-Germain. It is located at 56 Rue du Montparnasse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suitesunicrenoirsaintgermainparis.com\">http:\/\/www.suitesunicrenoirsaintgermainparis.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>H\u00f4tel Istria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hotel in Montparnasse where McAlmon was staying and to which Williams and Floss relocated during the 1927 trip to Paris. Located on 29, rue Campagne Premi\u00e8re in Paris<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magna-arbor-hotels.com\/hotels\/hotel-istria\">https:\/\/www.magna-arbor-hotels.com\/hotels\/hotel-istria<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Williams registers a number of famous sights in his accounts of stays in Paris, such as The Louvre, The Luxembourg Gardens, the Mus\u00e9e du Luxembourg, Pont Neuf, the Notre Dame, the Place Fran\u00e7ois Premier, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Catacombs, just to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of La Place Fran\u00e7ois 1er, a square Williams stumbles across and is impressed by, he writes that it is \u201cof that French austerity of design, gray stone cleanly cut and put together in complementary masses, like the Alexandrines of Racine\u201d (<em>Autobiography<\/em> 195). The place is located at the intersection of rue Fran\u00e7ois 1er, rue Bayard, and rue Jean Goujon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Caf\u00e9s and Restaurants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Le D\u00f4me<\/strong> (Lost Generation waterhole to which Williams goes a number of times, located at 108 Boulevard du Montparnasse)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-restaurant-le-d-me wp-block-embed-restaurant-le-d-me\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"OBQM9nLVEL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.restaurant-ledome.com\/\">Accueil<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u00ab\u00a0Accueil\u00a0\u00bb \u2014 Restaurant le D\u00f4me\" src=\"https:\/\/www.restaurant-ledome.com\/embed\/#?secret=OBQM9nLVEL\" data-secret=\"OBQM9nLVEL\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>La Closerie des Lilas<\/strong> (Hemingway\u2019s favorite caf\u00e9 in which to write; in the novel, Evans spots \u2019Harland\u2019 there)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Caf\u00e9 de la Paix<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Famous old Caf\u00e9 at the Place de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra, mentioned in<em> Voyage to Pagany<\/em>, when Evans visits it with Jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Les Deux Magots<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Famous caf\u00e9 at 6 Pl. Saint-Germain des Pr\u00e9s to which Williams and Bob McAlmon go together<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lesdeuxmagots.fr\">https:\/\/lesdeuxmagots.fr<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tour d\u2019Argent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An old establishment, where, with his aunt, Williams eats their signature canard press\u00e9<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tourdargent.com\/en\/the-tower\">https:\/\/tourdargent.com\/en\/the-tower<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Restaurant L\u2019Avenue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The restaurant where Williams had supper with Philippe and Mme. Soupault and George Antheil and which he visited several times in Paris. Today, there is a very famous restaurant of that name at 41 Avenue Montaigne, but it was founded only in 1994, so this is not the one. It was likely the Restaurant Lavenue on Boulevard du Montparnasse, close to Gare Montparnasse, where Bess and Evans also sip Dubonnets in <em>A Voyage to Pagany<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Trianon<\/strong> (Les Trianons)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The restaurant where they have dinner with Joyce and his wife, and where Joyce dined almost every night; it is no longer there, but it was located across from Gare Montparnasse. This is also where McAlmon threw a big party for Williams, with people like Joyce, Antheil, Ford, Loeb, Man Ray, Duchamp, Sylvia Beach, Mina Loy, and Louis Aragon (<em>Autobiography<\/em> 194).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Dingo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Dingo American Bar now hosts another restaurant, but there are photos there of what it used to look like when it was a bar of the Lost Generation. Williams refers to visiting it several times during the 1924 trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aubergedevenise.fr\/carte\">https:\/\/www.aubergedevenise.fr\/carte<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Addresses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>12 rue de l\u2019Od\u00e9on<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The address where they visit Sylvia Beach at Shakespeare and Company, in its original location, where it remained from its founding in 1919 until it closed in 1941<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>42 rue de la Buy\u00e8re<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The street in Montmartre, not far from Place Pigalle, where Williams and Ed, aged 15 and 14, lived with their mother at the house of the cousins M. Trufly and his wife Alice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>27 Rue de Fleurus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gertude Stein\u2019s home and salon, where Williams visited her on the 1927 journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Other places of interest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lyc\u00e9e Condorcet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prestigious school Ed and Williams attended in Paris) is located at 8 Rue du Havre. Among its alums are Marcel Proust, Paul Verlaine, and Henri Bergson<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Folies Berg\u00e8re<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The famous music hall that Williams visited on that very first turn-of-the-century visit to Paris.
